Let's do a running survey.

today i felt wiped out and almost lethargic. zero energy. maybe one more good night of sleep tonight will cure me?

my leg muscles have been a little sore following saturday's run. speaking of which, i haven't lifted weights since thursday. tomorrow (monday) is chest and back day; i hope the gym is open! i have weights and a bench in my apartment but i like doing lat pulldowns as part of my back workout.

this weekend i had a sampling of foods that were not on the diet plan, but wow it was great to taste real the real thing. my favorite food this weekend was a grilled bratwurst. i also had bites of a cookie, but i didn't even finish the whole thing. it didn't taste very satisfying.

what is bothering me even more than my purple toenail, is the fact that i might have to once again search for a pair of shoes that can carry me for 10+ miles without hurting me. its not the end of the world but its frustrating. i have purchased 4 pairs of running shoes within the last 6 months - 1 year timeframe: 2 asics, 1 spira, and 1 brooks. i haven't tested the brooks shoes for a long distance though, so they are next up on my list to try.
--------------
How about a little running survey?

1. What is your favorite long run pace?
Currently, I feel great between 10:30 and 10:45, like i could run forever!

2. What is your favorite (or typical) pre-run meal?
A banana. I'm still searching for the perfect combination of pre-run foods to eat.

3. What was the distance of your first ever, official race? (This isn't a contest, I'm just curious).
10K.

4. Do you typically run in groups or run alone?
Run alone.

5. Name one or two NEW running experiences (occurring within the past year), that you have grown the most from. poorly worded and i'm too tired to edit, but you get the idea. feel free to change the wording.
-This is kind of a tough one. I ran my first ever race in April and psychologically, it opened a lot of doors for me. I actually survived, and it gave me a tremendous sense of accomplishment. I began to look at running in a different light; I began to see it as a whole new outlet to challenge myself on several fronts. It also gave my running a purpose.
-This may sound stupid but running in Boulder on new trails and hiking the Flatiron helped me to grow because I came away with the confidence to run (and hike) in unfamiliar surroundings. That wasn't even the intended purpose of the trip but ever since then, I find myself searching for new uncharted running paths instead of my familiar routes. To put this into context, all during college I ran around a track! a track, people! 3 or 4 miles meant 12 or 16 laps. holy boring. I didn't feel like I was a worthy enough runner to even run around the campus (which was stupid but hey, better late than never to figure this out).

6. What is your least favorite structure to run on/over?
I use this question as an excuse to tell you all how much I dislike running on bridges. They seem endless; there is no way out except to keep running in a straight line until you reach the end.

Your turn (don't let me down, this is the first time i've ever started a survey!):
Dawn
AB
Audrey
Rebecca
Jeff
April Anne
Cassie
Dianna
Mia
Megan
and anybody else. spread the love around, i know how you all like surveys (cough cough).

  • 1. 8:30-9:00 guarantees I can run until I run out of water..

    2. I like the coffee/english muffin/banana on the drive to the office. But I've got a long commute, so if I huff the food down in the first 10 minutes or so of the drive, I'm good by the time I start running.

    3. Think my first was a 2 miler as a kid. The first one that I really remember is the Manchester (CT) 5 miler some time in the late 90's.

    4. Alone.

    5. Running in Snow - I used to bag it during the winter, and Trail Running - I'd never really attacked the trails like I have this year.

    6. I don't like underpasses - feel pinned in without a ditch to jump into. City sidewalks, strangely, don't affect me.

  • I will blog my replies later....but I'm still waiting for your answers on the other one :-)

  • HeLlO Brent. I will play. Am I supposed to answer these here?

    1. What is a long run? It's been a while...but I am going to go with 9:00-9:45.

    2. A) waffle or bagel or banana with peanut butter
    B) if i am away from home when i am supposed to eat: a Balance Bar
    C) when i run in the morning under an hour twenty: nothing

    3. 1 mile (5th grade field day)

    4. alone

    5. blogging. it's connected me with a whole new set of people who like to be active, are good role models for me, and struggle with the same things as me.

getting hurt a lot. it allowed me to help other people get better and avoid their own injuries (my friends read my blog and have e-mailed asking how they can train and avoid my pitfalls). it solidifed for me i want to do public health and have it be my actual job to help people keep themselves healthy

    6. i will go with anything that gets my feet wet...so, big puddles?

  • I am sorry about your toenail. I hope it heals soon. ~ I loved the running survey. I’ll get to it tomorrow after work (or while I am at work if my boss isn’t around) :)

  • Good god Brent, that toenail makes me wince! I love your survey, and I will definitely post answers tomorrow. I'm too tired (and full!) to think straight. Happy 4th! xoxo Mia

  • 1. long run pace? well, recently, the coach has me going out at around 8:30-8:45 and then putting the hammer down (to 7:00-7:30) for the last handful of miles. i absolutely love doing that.

    2. pre race meal? i'll either have a fruit shake with soy protien, or a big bowl of oatmeal, brown sugar and dried cranberries.

    3. if you don't count track meets in jr. high and high school, and the pft tests in the marines, then i'd have to say the 5k i ran on the morning of my wedding.

    4. i typically run alone. i'll try to hook up with my distance partner on long runs, or have smsmh hop on the bike and join me, but i'd say 75% of my runs are solo.

    5. well, first would be the increase in mileage. i've been consistantly working in the 50+ range over the past few months. coach had me train up to that level and then begin work on speed, rather than training up to that distance just prior to a specific event. and speaking of the coach, that'd have to be the other experience. the coach has really helped me get focused and serious about my training.

    6. least favorite structure? hmmm...i'd have to say the deck of a cruise ship. not because of the structure itself, but because of the crowds of unfit smokers that you have to weave through.

  • Sorry I took so long- I'm back from vacation now!

    1. What is your favorite long run pace?
    10 minute miles

    2. What is your favorite (or typical) pre-run meal?
One slice of bread with Skippy peanut butter; one glass of 1/2 water 1/2 gatorade mixed.

    3. What was the distance of your first ever, official race? (This isn't a contest, I'm just curious).
    5k

    4. Do you typically run in groups or run alone?
Tuesdays and Saturdays with a group (one of the benefits of TNT); other weekdays typically alone.

    5. Name one or two NEW running experiences (occurring within the past year), that you have grown the most from.
1- the marathon. I knew I was seriously hurt by mile 16, but I really wanted to finish. I learned that no matter how bad the pain is, if you really want it you can do it.
2- not being able to run for the past 4 weeks. It has been one of the hardest adjustments I've ever had to make. I started running to get in shape; I started racing to prove I could do it. Somewhere along the way I fell in love with running, but I also took it for granted. This past month has made me realize how much I love it and that I should take care to treat it gently (ie: not go too far or too fast or too far too fast, just take it as it comes)so I don't lose it again.

    6. What is your least favorite structure to run on/over?
Bowed/humped roads. They are an IT band sufferers worst nightmare.

  • Oops, I've been gone all weekend and missed the survey. I'll post it as tomorrow's entry, but it's already 5:30 and I have to get out of the office before I go crazy!
