not so organic after all

there was an article in the wall str33t journal on 4/19/05 that talked about the business of organic foods. here is a quote:

Some consumers also tend to assume that organic means no chemical pesticides were used. But organic regulations do allow for pesticides from a list of acceptable chemicals. Some farmers who call themselves "beyond organic " are trying to indicate that they use less chemical pesticide than organic farmers.

ha ha. organic foods have chemicals in them. struck me as funny. seems like manufacturers can get away with just about anything these days. like the 98% fat free oscar meyer shaved turkey in my fridge: it actually has 20% of calories from fat. hmmm. how do they get away with that? or the horsepower claims in cars. they advertise horsepower to the flywheel which is not as meaningful as the actual horsepower to the wheels on the ground. the general rule is to take the horsepower claim (which is flywheel hp), for example 180hp, multiplied by 0.78 = actual horsepower of your car of 140.

so what i'm trying to say is that i took tonight off. need a good night of sleep. later dudes.

  • That's crazy alright...the consumer really has to be savvy these days. I feel bad for the elderly & whatnot...who may be more easily deceived. :( You confused me with all that horsepower talk though.

  • The math! The math! It frightens me. All I want to know is if the car speeds up fast and if it's a pretty color. That's all I can bear to think about.

Dude! I knew you lived near the Twin Cities, but for some reason I thought it was an hour or so away. A missed Brent sighting! Just think of all the fame and glory I could have had in BlogLand had I been able to report on this celebrity event. Dammit.

I must say, however, that your city rocks. I had a great time and nearly salivated at all the trails and parks and biking spots. The one I really wanted to try was the Grand Rounds -- 50 miles all around the city. Sweet. Maybe I can talk you into doing it in running increments and writing reports on the journey.

  • My consumer "pet peeve" is when I buy a airfare ticket for $1, and with all the loopholes and taxes, and don't forget the loophole taxes ... my Visa bill comes in at $219.00

    Wow. How'd THAT happen??

  • I'd like to see that article. Sounds interesting.

I've tried to e-mail you twice and both times it has been returned. So I'm writing you here. I left you a comment to your comment on my site (re: artificial lawns).

Hope all is well with you! kirsten
