grass and the invisible vortex

for today's 3 mile run i spent as much time as possible running in the grass located in-between the street and the sidewalk. the grass was thick and spongy. there seemed to be an invisible vortex grabbing at my feet each time i took a stride. my feet seemed momentarily stuck with each step. tricky.

and then when it was necessary to go back onto the blacktop, BOOM! i felt like i was being shot out of a cannon. my feet were much quicker without that invisible vortex.

still sore but wanted to run anyway. i was hoping by some miracle that i wouldn't be sore but yeah, shins sore. i feel like i am shuffling.

when was the last time you ran FULL SPEED? seriously. full speed with all of your might? years? months? i would challenge you to give it a shot. even for 1/4 of a block. just pump your arms and bolt down the street as fast as your body can carry itself. you don't have to be in any kind of elite shape to run as fast as you can. i did it tonight, its fun. i can't even feel my legs when i do it.

i think as adults, it seems encouraged not to do things at full speed. i don't know how to explain it. like its not cool or something. i find myself holding back a little sometimes. as though my passage from childhood to adulthood required me to leave full-speed activities at the door. i don't know how to explain it. lets say you want to take the stairs at work...but you feel like running up them as fast as possible just for fun. no i'm sorry, thats not cool, so you walk up the stairs nice and slow. stuff like that. know what i'm saying? sometimes at work i will wildly pump my fists in the air when my recommendations work perfectly. when no one is looking that is.

run full speed, as fast as you possible can for as long as you can hold your pace. its awesome.

  • Know what? You just gave me a big frying-pan-on-the-head moment. My son is a "full speed" kid ... ie. crashes into everything in the house, and thought his name was "SLOW DOWN" til he was 3 I'm sure. You just made me remember how fun it is to be fast when you're a kid. I remember biking down my parent's driveway as fast as my legs could take me when I was a kid ... yet, my adult "SLOW DOWN" instinct would definitely take over now. Okay, I'll take that challenge and try the full speed run tomorrow.

  • Beverly - that's so funny. My four year old runs like hell from room to room, saying "I'm The Dash" (from The Incredibles). Cute!!

Brent - I did this months ago, when I first started running outside. The first 1/2 to 3/4 mile of the run route near my house is so steep that I can't run up it OR down it. But there is a mile section, just after this, that has a slight to moderate downhill the whole time. I ran it soooo fast the first time I did it! Not fast like an elite runner, but fast like legs akimbo, arms pumping, grinning like a fool. It was the most fun I'd had in about forever. Great advice!

  • When I was doing all that horrible HIIT cardio, I'd try for the standard 70% of max heart rate alternated with 85% of max heart rate. But then once in a while I'd do something I called "Going as fast as I would if there were zombies chasing me." I estimate it as 590,021% of my m.h.r.

It hurt like hell but was sort of cool too.

  • Well, don't you know that being an adult is all about being serious and responsible and a disciple to delayed gratification? Play should only occur in structured environments and under supervision, like during teambuilding activities at work. All other times should be consumed with sober, adult-like activities.

    Whatever the heck those are.

I agree, sprinting is fun. Whenever I have occassion to do so, I want to yell at the same time, like I remember doing when swinging as hard as I could on the swingset.

  • And that is why I love love love the One Mile Race.

No need to hold back, no need to 'go out easy'...just run as fast as your legs can carry you all the way to the finish line.

And then do some dry heaves as a cool down.

    Love it.

  • Okay, I'll do it on the 24th when I see that finish line ahead...lol. Acutally I usually try to do that for the last 1/2 to full block of my Tuesday runs. I may slug along for most of the race but I somehow always manage an all out finish.

  • I coach kids, and in doing quarters, it's all I can do to keep them reeled in for the first 100 or so. Going fast is fun, but I'm lousy at it and at my age, you can get hurt. Right now, nothing quicker than 85-90 sec quaters, but when I'm looking for real speed, 75's or less! Bang out 6-10 of them with 1-2 minutes rest, then you start to know what training's about!

  • ohhh, that sounds awesome. i need to seriously refuel and give this idea a try.

  • I have to say I can't remember the last time I ran fast. Actually I don't know if I ever have! heh.

Next time I go out for a jog I promise I'll try it. As long as there's nobody looking - because you know, it isn't COOL to go windmilling down a hill and fall flat on your arse laughing :P
