drum roll please................
diagnosis is..................
runner's knee!
more specifically: Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
after asking me a lot of questions about the pain/aches they took x-rays (standard M.O. i'm sure), mostly to verify that my knee cap was lined up properly and so forth. obviously an MRI would give clues on the cartilidge situation but i guess they didn't think i was that bad off.
check out my knees, taken by my crappy cell phone camera (below). i took them after the nurse told me to put my pants back on (teehee).
...........
..........
since i have been taking time off from running, none of the twisting and pulling things she did hurt.
it went like this:
"does this hurt?"
*yanks knee*
me: "no"
"this?"
*twists and pulls knee*
"no"
"can you bend your knee all the way back?"
"yeah"
and so forth.
i told her about all of my pain/aches and stuff, but i guess she didn't think it was that big of a deal. she told me that i can, "run through the pain a little bit". uhh, ok, she's the doctor.
i almost couldn't help but grin for the rest of the appointment. all i heard was that i can run, i don't remember much after that. ha ha.
she recommended a few sessions of physical therapy (3-6 sessions) so i know what exercises to do etc. she said the quad has 4 muscle areas/groups/something like that, and that if even one of them is out of balance or more weak than the others, this can impact the way the knee cap moves. it can get slightly out of alignment and start to grind on the cartilage. something like that. anyway, i need to make sure the muscles are all in balance. she had more things to say but thats kind of the gist of the situation as i see it.
i will probably get a second opinion, but for now i will go to a couple of physical therapy sessions and see if that helps at all.
i just got back from a little run! yeah!!! i went 4.4+ miles around lake of the isles and part of calhoun. great, love it over there. love it. i went slow; my average HR was 139, max of 162; pacing was probably 10:30 - 11:00. but my knee still felt a little achy beginning on mile 2.
i will continue to take it easy for a while but if i am able to run 3-5 miles, 3-4 times a week, i will be able to keep sane until i figure out where to go from here.
more later, but i thought i would give you an update. hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Great news! Take better notes next time, I'm very interested in hearing about these four different muscles and how to keep them all stronger. :)
I think you're on a great course... slow down, keep running as long as it's just a little bit of pain, and get in for some physical therapy. All doable!

Glad to hear you know what's wrong, and are going to be able to work on it! Definitely do the PT, that sounds like it would be useful even if a second opinion shows it's something else.

The PT and some "knee strenghing" is probably a good thing. Hope all goes well.

Glad you know what's wrong and can get to work "fixing" it. Take it slow and easy and get through the PT so you can get back on the road.
