20 report

hmmmm.

i don't know what to think about today's run. i guess i feel kind of disappointed. i was looking forward to being enlightened. somehow by running 20 miles, my body was supposed to tell my mind (or vice versa?) that yes, you are ready and you can do it. but no, i don't really feel like that. i'm confused!

the last several miles were tough (once again). after the 20th mile was complete, i wasn't so sure i would be able to run another 6.2 miles. i was kind of doubting myself a little bit. yeah you did 20 but could you really go on? i felt pretty tired. i mean, i didn't "leave it all out on the field" so to speak but i was very glad when it was all over.

another observation: it was hot. not hot for many of you, but for at least 4 weeks worth of long runs i have been starting out in the 60's and ending in the 70's. my head felt kind of dizzy and shivery at the end. i did not drink enough water. i tried to stop at all of the water pumps but i think i missed too many. another lesson learned. stop at ever water stop during the race you idiot!! i included the temp readings with my splits at the end of this post.

my other disappointment lies with the splits. i thought i would try to go a little faster today, maybe see if i could hold 10:00 average pace for the whole run. boooo, i couldn't do it. i had a couple horrible miles related to GU pit stops and a gatorade stop at my car that killed my splits goal. also, holding 10:00 pace for my last 3 miles was out of the question which was disappointing.

the positives: right now i don't feel tired. after my long runs i usually pass out for 20 or 30 minutes for a nap. right now i feel like it is any other day. i feel mentally fresh, alert. i don't feel weird at all, which is not something i could say after my first 16 miler, then 18 miler, etc.

overall based on all of the brain power that went into preparing for this run and eating all the carbs which made me all puffy, i feel sort of confused that i didn't have the best run of my life or whatever. hey speaking of puffy, i gained 2 lbs this week! crap. no big deal though i knew i would gain weight what with all the licorice and the mint patties. oh yeah mike and ikes too.

hmmmmmmmmm. maybe i will think of something more positive later on ;)

  • Congratulation! You ran 20 miles! Honestly, I felt the same when I was done my 20 miler ... another 6.2 are you insane! I didn't drink enough either that makes a huge difference.

Will you be able to run 6.2 more? ... absolutely! you know you can do 20, and on the day you will have the whole marathon buzz, it will be cooler and you will drink more. You are going to do amazing.

  • You can always count on adrenaline to push you through more miles and to run faster than you prepared for.

Congratulations on the 20 miler! That's awesome!

  • don't compare your long training runs to the race day. first off, you'll have gone through a taper and your body will be itching to run. *twitch*

and second, don't underestimate race day magic. all the cheering, the adrenaline, etc. it makes a huge difference.

  • Don't beat yourself up about it - the heat makes such a huge difference! I didn't know it got that hot up there????

  • running 20 in training and running 20 on the actual day are completely different. you're doing awesome and you'll MOST DEFINITELY be able to pound another 6.2!! by that point in the race, the crowds will be pumpin' and your heart will be thumpin'...you'll be able to TASTE the finish line (either that or a little bit of throw up in your mouth! j/k). :) way to go!!!

  • Way to get it done Brent! Maybe I'll run the other 6.2 for you later today, if I can brave the rain.

However on race day you won't need me or anyone, you will do it, no problem. Just think of all the hot chicks that will be at the finish line cheering for you. :-)

  • You put in the time, brent, and that's what probably matters the most at this point. On race day you'll be rested and revved. The crowd will carry you on. The hot chicks will be waiting for you. A lot will probably be coming in after you too. Your splits were pretty good, you know. Don't sweat it. Follow the plan. You'll do fantastic. The magic Jeff mentioned is real.

  • hip hip hooray for the 20 milers!!! you ROCKED those 20 are you kidding?!

i'm thinking we both could learn a little something from this weekend's long run.

as i've been told... this is what training is all about. find out now what to do and what not to do so you dont make those same mistakes on race day.

since i've never actually raced, i can't speak on what it'll be like to experience the crowd... but the RBFamily has never been wrong, so i'm gunna guess they know what they're talking about..

youre going to dominate that marathon. no doubt about it!

  • 20 miles. wow. still sounds unbelievable to me.

  • The others pretty much said it all. I had a similar "bad" 20-miler when I trained for my spring marathon, but I had a couple good ones too. I totally agree that if you can do 20, the other 6.2 will just happen. The crowd will carry you home!

  • I'm late coming in but I second what everyone else has said. You've put the time and miles in and will totally go the distance!!

By Blogger Lara, at 6:56 AM

  • Congratulations! 20 miles? Can you even believe it?? That’s awesome! You will definitely be able to finish on race day! The scariest training run is over, so let the sweet taper begin!!
