Poignant Irrelevance

earlier tonight i was able to get my resting HR down to 40 beats per minute several times, and 42 beats too. but when i took the actual test my HR was 49 beats which compares to 46 beats when i took the test 1 year ago. that kind of sucks but i think if i would have waited to take the HR test in the morning, it would have been lower (because by this evening, i had already logged 3 miles of running).

i also think the pressure of trying to achieve a low HR during the test caused me stress/anxiety and a more rapid HR. in order to get to 40 beats, i really tried hard to relax and breathe deeply. isn't that stupid, trying all these tricks to get the HR down for no apparent reason? picture me in my apartment trying to relax and meditate as best i can, in order to beat my HR reading from last year. how stupid.

my "OwnIndex" increased to 59 this year from 55 last year. i don't know how they come up with these things but that is a fitness test of some sort. all you do is strap on the HR monitor and lay down for 3 minutes, then stand for 3 minutes. and then magically, they know your fitness level. i don't know how legit that is but it improved y/y which is nice because i gained weight y/y and that is depressing. so i guess they balance out a little (not really but i'm trying to be optimistic).

"The Polar Fitness Test result, your OwnIndex, is most meaningful when comparing your individual values and changes in them. OwnIndex can also be interpreted according to your gender and age. Locate your OwnIndex on the table to find out your current cardiovascular fitness classification, compared with those who are of the same age and gender." 59 is very good, whereas >59 is excellent. i wish my bodyfat % was: very good. can't win 'em all.

i ran 3 miles this morning at an ok pace. in my stupidity, i ran another 2.6 miles tonight. i had energy i needed to burn off but i should have not jogged. my shins hurt. tomorrow i'm supposed to do 5 but i'm getting in 18 holes of golf, and i will try not to run at all. i think those magic 6-pack pills are giving me more energy.

  • What exactly is it measuring? How much cardio work you can handle?

BTW, I bought that Knife and Fork book you reviewed - I'm about half way through. I like it, but I'm suprised you found it as meaningful. You seem to be at a much higher fitness level then the book was designed for.

    Anyway, keep on truck'n !
