trail (long) run

i had to move my long run to today (Sunday). i know i am not supposed to move the schedule around but this is a shorter week (in miles) and i think it'll be ok.

i went back to that trail i recently re-discovered. it was tough! i strapped on the HR monitor and turned on the altitude setting in order to see what the hills looked like on paper. well it turns out they don't look so evil on my Polar read-out but they sure seem tough when i'm out there in the woods. its a little tricky to read but

Green: altitude
Red (left axis): heart rate
Blue (right axis): speed.

.
see where the blue lines spike down to zero a few times? thats me stopping to check the map, to make sure i'm going the right way. sure enough i ended up doubling back once because i missed a turn. heh.

i believe i averaged about 11:00 pace which is a little discouraging. you can see the pacing marked on the graph. bleah. i was trying to keep the HR down (which i was not very successful at anyway)-- average HR: 153. good times though, its pretty fun to run through a trail like this! have you ever seen a family of little ducks swim full speed through thick lilly pads? mom duck was sounding the alarm and all the kids were motoring through lilly pads as i ran by. funny. it freaked me out a little though.

  • don't forget that even though you feel like you're flying along when trail running, it requires much more effort than road running. so, don't beat yourself up over the 11 min pace! dianna and i averaged 10's on the trail we did saturday!

  • i think you can totally move your schedule around. as long as you move some other key days (rest and recovery days) appropriately it should be totally fine-and allow you to have a somewhat "normal" life :)
