Sly Moves: The Review
I finished Sly Moves: My Proven Program To Lose Weight, Build Strength, Gain Will Power, & Live Your Dream by Sylvester Stalone a few days ago. Whew that's a mouthful. Ha get it? A mouthful?
This is a good book, and an easy read. Part 1 of the book, which is about 50 pages, is called Sly on Sly. As I've mentioned in a previous entry, I'm a sucker for autobiographies. Did you know that he wrote the script for Rocky? He sold it on one condition: he could star as Rocky. Actually, he was willing to give it away as long has the studio would agree to let him star. Interesting, I didn't know that. Did you know there was a forceps accident at his birth that, "...immobilized the motor nerves on the left side of (his) face, leaving (him) with a crooked mouth, a droopy eye, and (that) famous locution..."? Interesting, I didn't know that either.
I find success stories fascinating. What motivated these people growing up? What drives them? Why didn't they quit when the going was tough? How'd they pick themselves up off the mat when everything seemed hopeless? Who were their heroes growing up? One of my favorite shows is Beyond The Glory, "Fox Sports Net's highest-rated weekly program". Totally awesome, I wish I could find some of the episodes on DVD. Very motivating stuff.
Sometimes I don't even know what drives me to be successful. I think about this often. I have some answers but thats a whole other blog in itself and something far too boring. Maybe I'll write my own book one day? But seriously, do you ever stop and think to yourself, why the heck do I work hard and have a drive to be successful in life? I'm not talking about money. I don't honestly think money motivates people (I could be wrong though). I don't think it is the MAIN motivator anyway. Usually there are other things beneath money that drive a person.
Can you tell I'm bored tonight?
So, back to the book. We learn a lot about Sly in the first 50 pages. While training for Rocky III, he got down to 2.8% body fat. Holy crap! Sometimes he'd have more than 30 cups of coffee a day, to boost his metabolism. He has taken 1/2 an ibuprofen a day for the last 25 years, for the positive health benefits. Those are just a couple of tidbits.
Part 2: Shaping up with Sly Moves. A lot of great lifting exercises neatly packed into 50 pages, with explanations and tips from Sly. Good stuff. I plan on adding some of these into my lifting routines.
Part 3: The Sly Moves Eating Plan. "Say Good-bye to Dieting", eating smart tips, and Sly's review of all the current "fad" diets. Learn Sly's favorite good fats, etc. Also, he likes to eat pineapple-flavored cottage cheese, and lots of it. This section is contains solid documentation and scientific stuff, he did his work on the sources (re: the benefits of certain foods etc.). Learn how to make the "Rocky Cookie", of which he used to consumed about 30-40 per day. Learn what's in his fridge and freezer.
Part 4: Sly Moves In Action. Includes his top 10 tips for life. Three days with Sly: he documents his every move hour by hour for 3 days.

You motivated me to ... get to Amazon! :) I'm a sucker for Sly, personally, and I would love to read his stuff. I love reading biographies too; real life is pretty compelling.

30? as in THIRTY cups of coffee per day?!?!?! WTF?! I can barely do one tall Starbucks a week and that keeps me up past midnight even when I drink it at 3pm!

I've asked myself that question every day for the last 3 years, and have yet to come up with the answer. If you do, make sure to let me know!
