Food In Silence

earlier today i went to a running store and i started asking the dude about clif shots etc. i said, "i'm running 9 miles on saturday...do you think i will need one of these? how long do i run before i need one?" he said, "well 9 miles lets see, that will take about an hour so..."

uhh. an hour, what are you smoking man? i brought him back down to earth by saying i'm more of your 10:00 pace type of a dude. which was sort of a white lie because i'm more like a 11:00 pace dude at that distance. i kind of like talking to people at the running store because they don't even blink at 9 miles. its kind of funky, like i'm on another planet. 9 miles? thats only an hour you wuss! hehe, its sweet.

he said some gatorade would be fine (when i ran 10 miles in april i had some gatorade toward the end but i still felt a little out of it). i bought a clif shot anyway, because i will need to eventually practice with it. honestly i'm freaked out by the clif shots...they feel gross and i bet its like thick syrupy goo! nasty. i also bought some sharkies for the first time ever. i ate a couple on the way home...they taste funky. edible though. the main reason i went to the running store was to pick up my chip and my # for tomorrow. coolio.

this post is huge.

i started a new diet yesterday. i also decided to turn off the tv while i eat from now on. it has been a difficult adjustment. it so boring to just sit here and eat in silence. but i feel so full when all i do is concentrate on eating so i guess thats a good thing.

  • Warning: this will be long!
LOL@ you turning of the TV to eat. What is the logic behind this? Less distraction, eat less? You could always just put less food on the plate :) As for the Clif shot/GU/Power Gel stuff- here is my $.02. Some people use it every 45 minutes to an hour or so and it works great for them. Some do one at mile 14 and mile 21, some eat like 6 in one marathon. It really just depends on your body and the best way to figure it out is to play around with it while training. For a 9-miler I would would test one out at mile 5 or 6. My issue with them is that I take one- I get a HUGE sugar rush and feel like a champ- and 3 miles later I am dead. Complete drop in blood sugar. The only way to maintain the rush is to eat more gels one right after the other. And too many gels WILL make you sick to your stomach after awhile. During the half marathon I ate one- at mile 9. Then I took advice from a veteran runner (25 time marathoner) and now carry a little ziploc baggie of gummy bears in the pocket of my shorts. I eat 3-4 bears every 3 miles or so. It's a little sugar and goes good with water/gatorade. In the marathon I ate one Power Gel at mile 21 b/c I was hurting and needed to be distracted. Had my knees not been killing me I wouldn't have had any at all- just my bears :)

  • Racing tomorow, cool & good luck. I know what you mean about the time to do 9 miles. Funny they seem to forget how long it takes us slow pokes. We might be slow, but we have endurance.

I like sharkies but find it better to suck them as otherwise they stick to my teeth. Gummy bears also work great. As does a power bar cut up in chunks. However, each of us is different so try different things on training runs til you find what works for you.

  • Hey, Brent. I tripped onto your blog while blog jumping.

I'm far slower than you, but I certainly don't consider myself less of a runner than the gazelles out there. I do what I can. It's better than letting my backside and couch become one.

As far as gels, I have been 'taste testing' various types in preparation for the half and full marathons I have slated for later this year. So far, I have found that Accel Gel is the least offensive. Of the two flavours I've tried - strawberry-kiwi and chocolate - the chocolate was the most tolerable. I also liked the fact that Accel has a 4-1 carb to protein ratio. I have noticed a difference in how my body reacts to that as opposed to the others. The consistency is different too in that it is thinner. That was a little easier to deal with than the Goo or any of the others I've tried.

Enough rambling. I've got to get out and do my own mileage for today!

    Cheers!
