Poignant Irrelevance

i bought a mask to wear while running outside in the cold. then it subsequently fell below zero (feels like -10F tonight). i went to the gym tonight instead of running outside. well, the mask is to wear when it is in the teens (and MAYBE in the high single-digits). i'm still not nutty enough to run in below zero temperatures. maybe one day, soon.

my form seems to suffer on the treadmill. my shins and calves have been a little sore/tight lately. i've been using the 'mill a little bit more due to the cold. maybe tomorrow should be a cross-training day. the current high temp forecast for saturday is +40F and i'd like to be fresh for a nice run outside.

next week: more travel. 2 or 3 nights. dangit.

this weekend i turned 31. i can't believe i'm so old. i have a well known weakness for cookies. my gf surprised me by purchasing a gigantic cookie "cake"!! it was so good. i highly recommend. i embraced my weakness for a weekend and i do not regret it a single bit.

i am constantly evaluating my place in life. mabye its because i'm getting older, i do not know. is this what happens when you get older? bleah.

  • Hey, GF smeared icing on your name! What is wrong with her?

Anyone over the age of 29 thinks about the meaning of life and their place in it, and what they have accomplished and what they haven't. Self-reflection is a good thing when it serves as a motivator; just don't let it be an obsession. I guess I'm saying try to have a glass-half-full view of what you've done in your life, and if what's lacking bothers you, come up with a strategy or a plan for what you want out of life. New Year's is actually a good time for that! Bucko and I have a tradition of a really long walk on New Year's Day, it's so quiet and no traffic, and we talk about the future. That alone doesn't solve everything, but it's good to have a plan, or at least identify goals...

And oh yeah, 31 is SO OLD.

  • We are so spoiled in California! It was about 50 degrees on Tuesday night and I was bundled up for my run in a knit hat, gloves, two shirt layers, and long running pants. Yeesh!

You still look about 13, so I wouldn't sweat the age stuff. Plus, the 30s are soooooo fun! It's all just beginning. (I'm serious!)

  • Happy birthday, "old man."

I will run in below zero conditions, but never if there is any wind at that temperature. I usually run in the woods on trails, so that's not a problem. Cold air is not a problem for my asthma, but the 'dryness' of air that cold can be a problem for it.
    We're a balmy 12 degrees this morning!

    Happy trails,
    Bad Ben

  • I'm singing "Happy Birthday" for you, so be very glad they don't have audio commenting! :-)

I'm with Marla, btw, because 31 is just a baby. (And really, who isn't with Marla???)

  • Happy Birthday!!! The past year has been a great one for you - you and the gf seem so happy together! I know 31 will be a blast. I agree with m@rla's comment - self reflection is totally normal and keeps you on the right track!

  • happy birfday!! no, what happens when you get older is you stop thinking about things, because generally you can't remember anything anyway. and then, you start wondering why, when you run, you are leaking.

this has been a public service announcement.

    31 ROCKS!

  • Are you going to exchange Large Christmas gifts with your sister again this year? I went shopping yesterday and saw a huge calculator (2x3 feet). I thought it would be perfect for you! ~ It’s great that you are still running. I hope all is well. Happy Birthday.
