Marathon Minutes

The sign-up is in April. I would really love to run the whole thing, wouldn't that be great? On the other hand.. from what I understand, Marathons are even tough for skinny people!

What I'm considering is starting the novice half marathon program now. Or Feb 1 because its always better to start things on day 1. Right? So that would give me until April to see how I can do with building up some miles. Maybe a miracle would happen and I would continue to cut more weight over the next few months. And by April I would be feeling like superman. Gotta sign up in April to get into the October Marathon because they sell out the tickets so to speak.

I think this is a fine solution for now. There are days at the office when I will be in the middle of something and think to myself, could I do it? Could I do IT?? I'll make my way over the printer or whatever and I'll feel a weird ping in my knee and think, nahhhh....who runs 4 miles feels weird knee pings and then signs up for a marathon. But could I?

I think running the half would be so awesome though too. I foresee an injury free (hey that rhymed) training program all the way up to the half. I see myself running the half with a smile on my face the whole way. I see finishing the half and running with glee the day after. The full marathon...I see potential injury, at this weight anyway. But I don't want to discount that I may be able to do it!

So that is the plan for now.

  • What novice program are you going to follow? Hal's? ~ Don't listen to Richard (sorry Richard) finishing the 1/2 will give you a huge sense of accomplishment. Not many people can say they ran 13 miles! Go for it!!!

  • You can do whatever you set your mind to do, but don't discount the half marathon-- it is also a great accomplishment!. If you don't have to sign up until April, you could try increasing your base number of miles that you run each week and see how you're doing in terms of injuries, then decide. There is a great FAQ and advice on training for marathons at the NYC Road Runners website (http://www.nycmarathon.org/training/index.html).
