Well kids, I made it back from nice, sunny hot phoenix. Wow it was nice to just soak up some rays with absolutely no agenda, no stupid wireless email, cell phone off, book in hand. The sun felt so good.
Workouts. I ran 3 times in Phoenix.
The first run was monday morning at about 7am through a neighborhood that was by the Phoenician (where I stayed). Its about 77 degrees when one wakes up in AZ, it feels so comfortable. I came across several runners and walkers who were all very friendly "good morning!" one nice lady said. People aren't even that nice in my own neighborhood. Anyway, I ran for about 3 miles, nothing too intense. This is really where the Polar 625x came in handy because I didn't have to worry about scouting out any distances ahead of time or wondering how far I had gone, blah blah blah, I just had to look at my HR monitor to check my distance. Speaking of which, the HR monitor scolded me the whole way about how many extra calories I had consumed over the last few months. Sorry about that mister HR, but we're getting it under control now.
The second run was later that same day on the 'mill. I felt the need to work out but at 4-5pm in Phoenix its like 100 degrees out and that combined with my earlier lecture from the HR, I knew I had no business running outside. So I sauntered over to the "center for well being" or something like that. The guy told me I had to fork over $10 to work out, whatever, I'm on vacation so here have my stupid $10 so I can work out. I lifted back and biceps and then hit the 'mill for about 20 minutes jog/10 minutes cool down. Each treadmill has a flat screen tv which seems cool in theory, but because they are so close to your eyeballs, the magnitude of each up and down stride sort of makes it hard to watch the screen--almost better to just have a bunch of tv's further away from the 'mill like at the clubs.
The third run was on tuesday night at about 4.30 or 5.00pm. It felt like it was in the low 80's but because there is no humidity its just so tempting to go running anyway. So i did. This was a really tough run. Although i went back to the same neighborhood, i had just eaten dinner not too long ago plus the pavement. oh the pavement. the black hot pavement! it must have been over 100 degrees--my feet were so hot. i probably only ran 2 miles and there were several 1-1.5 minute walk increments thrown in so i would not pass out.
So thats it. not too ambitious but better than nothing i guess. more later on the trip.
