$500,000 Triathlon In My Backyard

Update: I just finished watching it on tv. The overall winner won $160,000 plus a new car. The top female finisher got $80,000. Much of the bike route went along the route of my 10K race. cool.

i went for a run this morning and then i went to see the triathlon!! it was awesome. those people are my heroes! it was really hot this morning; when i left at 11.30am or so, it was already 90 degrees and there were tons and tons of people still out there. whew.

to know how much training they have most likely been through and ups/downs etc, it was fun to watch them out there grinding it out. i have never watched a triathlon before so it was pretty cool to see people biking and running all over the place. didn't watch much swimming but i took an overview shot. my favorite part was when friends/family cheered super loud for their racer. then that person would have a HUGE grin on their face for as long as i could see them in my view. good stuff!

it was also kinda weird to see some women running with these skimpy swimming suits. i guess that is what they do at triathlons though? it was actually a little weird to see them running in even a full body swimsuit. i didn't really think much of it but i guess i'm just used to seeing girls run with shorts on!

the total purse is $500,000! the local media claims it is one of the top 3 triathlons in the country and the top event when it is not an olympic year. they tend to over exaggerate things so i'm thinking maybe it was a top 10? not sure. they are broadcasting it on NBC at 2pm cst. not sure if it is national broadcast or only local.

the running course took place around lake nokomis, my fav running route! sweet. they even had to go part way on the evil bridge. i will post my own run thoughts from this morning later on.

bikers cruising. these people were really moving fast.

..

another shot of a bike transition area.

after getting their bikes, they had to walk up to a red line (near the red stripe on that dudes shorts), then they got on and rode away.

people swimming.

this is the finish chute, only about 20 or 30 more yard to go. weird, how'd that girl get in the picture? i had no idea!

a view of the bike change area (or whatever its called)

a loop on the run portion took place on the evil bridge!

some people running.

  • I didn't realize how evil that bridge was until this photo, where you can just see their little heads showing. That's so cool they had it in your park, it's almost like you're famous.

  • I'm alway inspired by folks who compete in these events. Someday maybe...so are you going to do one?
